Aurora Borealis at Shadow Lake Lodge

by Brianna Sinkler

On the last weekend of operations for the 2023 winter season I cross-country skied 14km to Shadow Lake Lodge on a chilly morning with my friend by my side. I remember turning a corner and getting the first view of Mount Ball towing over the lodge on a bluebird day. It was an impressive sight to see all the log cabins in a row in the middle of the backcountry.

In the afternoon I relaxed on the porch of the main lodge with a warm cup of tea in my hand. It couldn’t have been more peaceful sitting on the bench while soaking up the sun bouncing off the blanket of white snow.

The evening was something I’ll never forget. Before climbing under my cozy duvet I stepped out of my cabin to brush my teeth and was delighted to see the green and pink of the aurora borealis dancing in the sky. I knocked on everyone’s cabin to make sure we all saw the flickering lights above our heads.

We stood out in the snow in awe. With our boots keeping our toes warm, nobody wanted to go back inside even though it was past our bedtime.

Watching the northern lights in the backcountry with friends: that is my definition of magical!

With stunning views everywhere you look, cozy private cabins, and our fabulous chef Ryan and the friendly service team cooking up tasty meals, my first time staying at Shadow Lake Lodge couldn’t have been more memorable. It’s a special place in the mountains and I cannot wait to return to make more memories.
