Ball Pass

Rating: Moderate
Distance: 8km one way
Elevation gain: 370m
Allow: 5 to 6 hours return

This is a mostly level trail through wide mountain meadows, culminating in spectacular views of the hanging glacier on Mt. Ball from the south side of the pass. Enroute, you will pass through stands of larch and floral meadows.

The trail: From the lodge, hike to Shadow Lake, cross over the large foot bridge at the outlet and head up Haiduk Creek. At 5.3km, Ball Pass Junction and campground RE 21, turn right to follow a small creek. The path starts to climb gently at first, then steeply as you approach the pass. Near the top of the pass, in the distance, you glimpse the east end of Shadow Lake and the lodge.

Ball Pass is a study in contrast – the north side featuring stark, rugged alpine terrain, and the south side, wild flower-dotted subalpine meadows.
